VARI TANDULACHI UPMA, CHAMA ARI UPMA, SANWA UPMA, UPWAS KA UPMA

Upma is normally made with suji (semolina) or lapsi or rice rava.  It can be made plain or with some vegetables but for upwas, these items are not used by some people.  Most of the  people use Vari Tandul, Chama arisi, sama chaval, sanva it is known as.  Since just plain upma will not be much tastier, i have used ratalu along with it.  Let us see the recipe now.




Ingredients:


1/2 cup vari tandul
2 tbsp ghee
1 tsp oil
1 tbsp cashewnuts
1 tsp crushed black pepper and jeera
1 tsp mustard seeds
few curry leaves
2 cups water.
a pinch of asafoetida
1 medium size ratalu (sweet potato)
salt as per taste.

Method:

  • Peel and grate the sweet potato.
  • Heat oil and ghee in kadai
  • add the mustard seeds, when it splutters, add the black pepper, jeera, asafoetida
  • add the grated sweet potato and saute for a minute
  • add the vari thandul and saute for another two minutes.
  • add required amount of salt, and 2 cups water (I added only 11/2 cup water and felt it is too dry to eat hence added another cup of hot water and cooked ).  This became perfect.
  • Serve hot with curd or green chutney. (coriander chutney)
