PUFFED RICE URUNDAI, PORI URUNDAI

Karthigai Deepam is a festival of lights celebrated in the Tamil month of Karthigai, in Malayalam Vrischikam.   In the evening huge rangolis or kolams are drawn and lamps are lit.  It is a beautiful sight.  I love to draw rangoli and keep the vilaku.

This festival is celebrated according to my knowledge for the well being of brothers.  On this day, both Aval Pori - fried beaten rice and Nel Pori - puffed rice urundais or balls or as it is  are made with jaggery for neivedyam.   During this season, we get these two varieties of poris or murmuras or kurmuras.  We also make adai with vellam (jaggery) and white home made butter for neivedyam along with Nei appam.

Aval pori urundai, Beaten rice balls

Nel pori urundai, puffed rice balls.

Let us have a look at the recipe now:

Ingredients:

3 cup puffed rice (pori aval pori or nel pori)
3/4 cup grated jaggery ( 1 cup if you want to make urundai)
1/2 tsp cardamom powder
1/2 tsp dry ginger powder
1/4 to 1/2  cup water
2 tbsp coconut bits
1  tbsp ghee to grease the hand and 1 tbsp for frying coconut bits

Method:

Step 1

Clean the puffed rice/beaten rice. To remove the dust particles sieve through and pick the husks.
Roast the coconut bits in one teaspoon ghee and keep aside.

Step 2

Melt the jaggery with the water, remove impurities.
Wash the kadai, put back the jaggery syrup, roasted coconut bits  in the kadai and boil till you get 2-3 thread consistency. To check the same, if you drop little syrup in normal water, you should be able to make a hard ball out of it. Then the consistency is right to pour in the puffed/beaten rice.
At this stage, add the ginger powder and cardamom powder and mix well.

Step 3

Immediately pour the same in the pori,  mix  well  to coat the same evenly. Grease you palm with little ghee and make balls out of it when it is warm.

Your neivedyam is ready
