AVAL PUTTU, BEATEN RICE PUTTU, POHA PUTTU

Aval puttu is made for Janmashtami.  Another variety of sweet made with the beaten rice or aval or poha.  When Kuchelan (sudama) went to see Krishna, he carried some beaten rice, poha to offer him.  So one of the neivedyam offered to Krishna is aval with  vellam or sugar or milk.

Le us look at the recipe now:

Ingredients:

3 cups aval, poha, beaten rice (Jada poha, thick poha)
1 1/4 jaggery
handful of grated coconut
handful of coconut bits
6 tbsp ghee
1/4 tsp cardamom powder
3 tbsp cashew nuts broken

Method:

heat little ghee in a kadai and fry the cashews and keep aside.
clean the poha and grind to a fine powder in a mixer.
sprinkle water on the poha powder, mix well and keep aside for 15 minutes.
Ensure that you do not add too much of water.  the water should be used to make the same little bit wet that is all when you remove it in hand, it should be in a powder form only.

Now melt the jaggery in 1/4 water and remove the impurities, if any.

Pour it back to the same kadai and boil the same till you get 2- 3 thread consistency.  Add the coconut bits and grated coconut, cardamom powder, mix well.  Now the time to add  the powered beaten rice and mix well.  After mixing the same, add the ghee and keep on stirring it till you get a granular form of puttu

remove from the gas and mix the fried cashews in it.
