HORSE GRAM CURRY, MUTHIRA KOOTU

Horsegram is or kulith or muthira it is called, is  rich in B-complex vitamins,  proteine and  highly nutritious. 

It is  commonly prescribed in ayurvedic medicine for conditions like difficult breathing, cough, gastric problems, ulcers, worm infections and excessive perspiration. Some alternative medicine experts even consider horse gram as a good remedy to control joints pain. It can be also used as a natural health tonic.    It tones up the digestive system and prevents acidity and flatulence. 


People suffering from spleen enlargement, colic and weak liver can also benefit from this plants medicinal properties. People with kidney stones, hypertension, gall stones also benefit from its intake.

Various dishes are made out with Kulith or horsegram or muthira.  One of the dish is presented here for you.

Ingredients

Horsegram - 1/2 cup

Red chilli - 1
Oil - 1 tsp
Grated coconut - 1/4 
1/4 tsp cumin seeds
Salt

For tempering


Oil - 1 tsp

Curry leaves - few
Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
Urid dal 1/2 tsp
Asafoeitida - pinch

Method


 Pick the horse gram, wash and soak overnight.  The reason for picking is there will be stone in it.

Pressure cook the same by  adding salt and water till soft. 
heat oil in a kadai, roast the red chilli, grind it along with cumin seeds and coconut,  and a tablespoon of cooked kulith, keep aside.
Now mix the cooked kulith, coconut gravy and bring to a boil.  adjust salt.

Temper with the ingredients mentioned under tempering and serve hot with rice, chapati.

METHOD II



Horsegram - 1/2 cup

Tomato Paste/masala 3 tbsp    tomato-paste-masala.html
Garam Masala - 1/2 tsp
salt
sugar -1/4 tsp



Tempering:


1 tsp oil

1/4 tsp cumin seeds


Method:


Pick the horse gram, wash and soak overnight.  The reason for picking is there will be stone in it.

Pressure cook the same by  adding salt and water till soft. Take out a tablespoon of cooked kulith and smash well.
heat oil in a kadai,  add the cumin seeds, when it changes the colour, add the tomato paste and saute for a minute.  add in the cooked kulith and stir well. add the smashed kulith,  water and adjust the consistency according to your requirement.  when it comes to a boil, remove from the gas.  Add in the garam masala, sugar and stir well.  Garnish with coriander leaves.
serve hot with chapati, roti.
